if the NYT says so, it must be true.

just like its belated acknowledgement of hipsters, PBR and podcasts, the nytimes has finally come through with a dining section focused on farming. maybe they’re taking a cue from the LA times (which very often has a stronger food section, by virtue of its superior in-house talent), which actually did a special farmers’ market section a few weeks back. either way, i think it’s a real validation of how much agriculture (and proponents of a responsible agriculture) has risen in the eyes of the american public. or even if it’s just a sign that pastured poultry is the new black, that’s still okay. we may not all be able to afford organic all the time or buy (much less know, personally) directly from our local farmers, but it has to start somewhere, right? let’s at least get the times’ readership thinking about their local food producer.

i like also that the NYT chose a feature about women farmers (fluffy, but still) and also included a story on grass-fed beef.

    sometime soon I need to blog about this essay i just read. it was in this “best food writing 2004” anthology, and is about the evolution about food porn. the author’s perspective is that food porn does journalism and food journalism a disservice, since your job is to advertise this lifestyle for people to dream about but not live; and how tightly linked it is to the food industry.

    sorry, I didn’t explain it very well — I can’t do a good job off the top of my head, but maybe I can illustrate with an example the author opens the essay with?

    She is at a book signing, and there’s a long line of people who want to buy her book (which is basically a compilation of some of her NYT articles), and someone (the author’s mom?) asks a woman in line if she actually cooks the recipes, and she says something to the effect of “heavens no! but we all just cut out the articles and it makes us feel better” and everyone in line agrees with her.

    Um, I didn’t do a good job of that. I will write a real commentary sometime with the essay by my side and make more sense :)–>
