found in translation.

on a little jaunt up to torino yesterday, “the simpsons” came up during a conversation, and apparently, they’ve done a really genius job of translating this wholly american phenomenon to italian shores: the people behind the dubbing saw fit to fix each character with an appropriate regional accent, just as in the american original, the characters represent specific american types of people by their accents/slang/etc. so, the scottish janitor has become a sardinian one here, and the chief of police wiggum has a neapolitan accent. and apu speaks, of course, in indian-accented italian. the simpson family just speaks the straight-up italian equivalent of no-accent, middle-american english. i must, must get my hands on the italian dvds. and it only makes me wonder what the simpsons are like in france, japan, or, like, pakistan.
