Out-of-towners

get clothed. Or hatted, anyway:

David and I have a little trade going (no, it has nothing to do with tops or bottoms or anything remotely masochistic), and this is my first installment, Staceyjoy’s Marsan Watchcap, in Cascade 220 Superwash. (David models the hat properly here.)

They also get fed.

Exhibit A:

Rachel and Jeff at Setagaya.

Exhibit B:

Linda (and Ben) at Shopsins. (Naturally, Stolbach and I could not resist the menu item called Blisters On My Sisters”.) How do these guys manage to have all the stuff on the menu prepped?

Exhibit C:

Daniele at Pearl Oyster Bar. The Italians, much to my gratification, loved Pearl, Setagaya, and Momofuku Ssam. I have to say, it is amazing to watch someone who’s never tasted sushi before go through the whole omakase experience.

Alright, we’re all caught up now.

NY eats fondly remembered

i’m ridiculously far behind on everything. but to cross off at least one thing from my list, here’s the recap of what andy and i sampled last time we were in new york (in august!):

- bread (nolita): recommended by the ‘foo, but it was fairly disappointing. started w/ the bruschetta which was mediocre tomatoes on this ridiculously unserviceable thick white bread, and my pesto pasta was similarly bland. andy’s aged salami sandwich was a bit better though, and his cucumber yogurt dill soup was nice.

- los dos molinos (119 east 18th, union sq): recommended by the village voice’s sietsema via winnie. we were hoping for some good mexican food for once, but this was completely ordinary save for the spiciness which was promised and delivered. i had a deep-fried burro and andy had a chicken chile plate, but both were completely unremarkable.

- all was not disappointment, however. blaue gans (139 duane st, tribeca) was a nice reco from winnie. for saturday (i think) brunch it was almost completely empty, with nice low-key waitstaff. andy had some fantastic sausage and i had the apple pancakes which were good, although rather more melt-in-your-mouth than i would prefer. my potatoes were simply fantastic though, although i’m not sure if they’re on the regular menu. we both had some memorable pastries as well.

- thor (the hotel on rivington, 107 rivington st (between essex and ludlow st), LES): we count ourselves lucky that we got to thor before chef kurt gutenbrunner called it quits. i haven’t found the full text of the ny times article about it (the article that also mentions tom colicchio’s decision to leave gramercy tavern), but it happened soon after we were there and i believe it was motivated by his desire to bring more of his austrian background into the dishes and the owners’ resistance. from our experience, we heartily side with the chef. the meal we had was clearly of high standard and we definitely enjoyed it, but the menu was incredibly conservative and didn’t at all stand apart from your average high end american restaurant. andy had been hoping for some excellent meat a la blaue gans and both of us had been expecting a more unique experience. andy’s highlight was sardines w/ a lime relish over caramelized cauliflower and mine was a pretty nice chinese mushroom dish (both were appetizers).

and a quick link to end: winnie’s prob. already seen this, but i randomly came across a whole page with patterns for food to knit. knock yourself out!

Idle hands

it’s been a busy summer over here, even if little evidence of that has surfaced on this here blog. in the event that you thought i had abandoned yarncrafts forever or have just been twiddling my thumbs these past couple of months, i give you my latest completed knitting projects:

from interweave knits summer 2005, it’s the dress on the cover (better picture here, halfway down the page). only mine’s a better color (redheads + gray do not a happy combination make). made with phildar licorne on no. 4s. and yes, i got a haircut. reverting back to those skunk stripes i had in 2003. (if you’re passing through edinburgh and need a haircut, i have just the person for you. petra might just be better than richard. but shhhhh, don’t tell him i said so.)

like my buttons?

from interweave spring 2006, the prairie tunic. okay, this one looks better on the ectomorphic model. again, made with phildar licorne on no. 4s.

I am [almost] speechless.

this is pretty freakin’ amazing. and not a little weird. but props for the anatomical correctness (particularly the bobbles on the pancreas). check out some of the other crazy shit she makes.

Snowed-in weekends

okay, so most of the snow on the street has melted, but it’s still 4C out there. so right now you can find me indoors, making

a stash-reducing garter-stich shawl. (and looking more and more like a forlorn old homeless lady all the time, consequently.)
and eating

which began as carbonnades flamandes, but just onions and beef seemed too boring, so it became an irish stew of sorts. after i browned the meat and got the onions all melty and sweated the carrots and potatoes, i upended a big ol’ bottle of stella and whatever leftover stock i had hanging out in the fridge, stuck a bay leaf in it and called it a day. except that, an hour and a half later, it wasn’t getting any thicker, so i ended up making my first successful roux (directly after my tenth unsuccessful burnt, lumpy roux) and got it to a nice deep brown, even. i discovered that pentole and am discovering the merits of letting a little browned crust of rice form at the bottom of the pot (on purpose). what does this taste like — rice krispies? barley tea? think i’ve read somewhere that there’s a specific name for this crusty rice in chinese. i remember linda telling me it’s especially good fried in butter. (but then again, what isn’t?) i just like to sprinkle some maldon’s on it and eat it with my fingers.

this stew on rice thing was a fixture of my childhood. but mom always used cornstarch to thicken hers.
